One of the most intimidating aspects clients face after a car crash is the unknown. Questions such as: “Who should I call?” and “What steps should I take” are normal. The purpose of this blog is to provide you with a road-map of what you should do immediately after a car crash. Of course, each collision and each person involved are different, and so the information provided is exactly that: information. Nothing contained in this blog should be considered legal advice, and the readers are encouraged to contact Putman Law Offices at (419) 238-2200 to discuss their individual case.

Immediately after the crash:

The health and safety of everyone involved in the collision is of the utmost importance. Calling 9-1-1 or law enforcement is absolutely crucial. If you are able, call 9-1-1 yourself or have someone else nearby call.

Next, it is time to focus on the injured parties. Some times, injuries can be obvious. A broken bone, cut, or abrasion are immediately noticed. Other times, injuries can be much less obvious. Injuries to your neck, back, or head can often go undetected for several hours, days or even weeks. In any event, do not disregard any injury. Seek medical assistance immediately, and do not hesitate to allow an EMT to provide you with initial care. An EMT at the site of the collision is not fully equipped to provide complete coverage of many injuries. Therefore, a visit to an emergency room is also always a good idea. Of course, follow whatever advise the medical staff provides.

Finally, you may be approached by law enforcement with respect to how the accident occurred. If the collision was not your fault, providing a statement as to the specifics of how the crash took place is proper. If the accident was your fault, you have the right to remain silent and would be well-cautioned to exercise that right.

Within day after the crash:

It is recommended that you contact Putman Law Offices at (419) 238-2200 as soon as possible after the collision. Here, we will walk you through the next steps to take, and work with you towards your total recovery – physically, mentally, emotionally and financially. Attorney Shaun Putman will take away the stress of dealing with insurance companies, and the fear of falling into one of their traps.

You should also contact your insurance company as quickly as possible after the collision to alert

them to the fact that the collision took place. However, if the other driver’s insurance company contacts you, you should NEVER provide any statement to them, and instead simply say: “My attorney will be in contact with you.” NEVER discuss the collision, your injuries, your prior health, or any other topic with the other insurance company. Most importantly, NEVER sign any documents the other insurance company provides you and NEVER discuss settlement or accept money without first contacting Putman Law Offices.
